Mosaic always mesmerized me with visually stunning and eye-catching appeal. I always like the materials from which mosaics can be made -stones, glass, ceramic, clay tiles, etc. Warm and earthy. When I see mosaics,I remember feelings of joy and happiness from my childhood, and fond memories of playing with a kaleidoscope. Somebody unknown said that “In a world of chaos, mosaic art is a calming and harmonious influence,” which is very true. At least for me.

Here are some interesting facts about this majestic art :                                                           

  • Mosaic is one of the universal ways to decorate any interior. 

  • Practically all ancient civilizations used mosaics in monumental compositions, in small forms and for furniture decoration. 

  • The earliest known example of mosaic art dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia.

  • The word “ mosaic” comes from the Italian word “mosaico”, which means “work of Muse”, referring to the inspiration that artists draw from the divine.

  • One of the most famous examples of mosaic art is Alexander Mosaic in  the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

  • The largest mosaic in the world is located in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. It covers an area of approximately 17,000 square feet and features millions of individual mosaic tiles.

  • The largest mosaic art museum is Zeugma Mosaic Art Museum in the town of Gaziantep, Turkey.

  • The process of creating mosaics involves cutting small pieces of glass, stone, ceramics, or other materials into precise shapes and sizes, then arranging them on a surface to create a larger image or design.Modern mosaic artists often use recycled materials, such as glass bottles or broken ceramics.

  • The mosaics luxurious colors and richness of design bring individuality to the items, eliminating stereotypes and giving the entire interior ensemble charm and respectability.
